Daniel Crooks’ startling video-scapes excite, challenge and captivate his audiences. Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is privileged to exhibit his latest work, High Street (after Ruscha). This work was commissioned by the City of Darebin for the Darebin Art Collection in 2017.
It is a 17 minute video but it is what you see in the 17 minutes that is so intriguing. Crooks sets out to document his neighbourhood in High Street, Preston in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The title references American artist Edward Ruscha’s (1937-) photographic documentation of the infamous Sunset Boulevard, where he captured the multitude of gas stations, hotel swimming pools, apartments, parking lots with his ‘no-style’ photography. The two-dimensional flatness presented in each page of Ruscha’s concertina books is clearly evident in Crooks’ most recent work.
