Exhibition -Ruth Cummins: Tidying Down
Tidying Down responds to contemporary advice literature surrounding domestic order and improvement. Ruth’s textile based artworks have elements of soft sculpture, domestic furnishing and painting, blending textile, craft and everyday materials. They appear as assemblage, often using supporting magnetic or detachable components.
Ruth describes her work as being ‘quite anxiously charged about fastening things using temporary or detachable devices such as quick-release buckles or magnets. Although the works in this show aren’t intended to be interacted with physically, these fastenings become loaded with the desire to be removed, modified or touched. I often think of them as similar to cheap accessories that feel both at once significant and disposable.’
Tidying down continues the artist’s investigation into textiles as agents of domestic spatial modification. This exhibition builds on a recent solo show titled Bad Cushion at Bus Projects in 2018, Ruth stated ‘In these works, the cushion becomes both spatial modifier and frame.’ Playing off idealised qualities of ‘good’ interior improvement, the artworks from Bad Cushion are extended in Tidying down creating a suite of quasi-furnishings.
Ruth’s current practice questions the advice offered in Kondo’s bestselling guide to ‘tidying up’, as she challenges notions of accumulation, order and the sentimental. Through employing strategies such as holding, dropping and stuffing, Tidying Down proposes an alternate spatial practice in relation to order and improvement.
