The University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge National Final will see the winning high schools from each state go head to head in a series of challenging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities in Dubbo this Friday.

Over 700 schools have competed in 99 days on competition around the country over the past year, all striving to reach the National Final in Dubbo on November 3rd.

The event will see the year 9 -10 students performing a wide array of actives requiring a high level of skill and teamwork as well as application of STEM principles.

“The Science and Engineering Challenge 2017 National Final represents the annual culmination of one of the biggest and most successful STEM engagement programs in Australia,” said Dr Terry Burns, Director of the program.

The winning team will get the opportunity to have a behind the scenes tour of Google headquarters in Sydney, as well as being named 2017 National Champion.

As well as the high school national competition, the Science and Engineering Challenge runs a number of other STEM outreaches. The program is designed to inspire students to consider future STEM careers by involving them in a series of fun and engaging science and engineering-based activities that would not normally be available in a school classroom.
